Dark dark brown (EBC: 48) with big beige head. The head sinks fast and leaves some lacing on the glass.
Strong smoked aroma with some hints of the Amarillo hops. I’m also getting some milk chocolate, caramel and nuts. The smoke is by far the dominating smell. This beer uses a wheat beer yeast that adds another dimension to the aroma.
As in the aroma, the smoke is dominant in the flavor, but not as much. There is a bit of alcohol as well, but not much (ABV of 8%). Most of what is in the aroma can be found in the flavor as well. Caramel, nuts, roasted malts, some peaty smoke and some sting from the hops. There is not much bitterness in the body (33 IBUs).
The finish is long and not as smoky as one would imagine. I’m getting more from the hops in the finish, but the smoke is still there.
I really like this style of beer, so I’m going high … 4.2/5. This bottle is batch #294.
