The 1st of June 2011 was a pretty special day for Systembolaget in Sweden. This day was (as far as I know) the very first time a mixed pack was sold. This mixed pack was none other than BrewDog’s IPA is Dead pack, a mixed 4-pack with 4 single hop IPA’s.
Being a fan of BrewDog I had to get my paws on some of these mixed packs of course. My girlfriend picked them up for me a couple of days ago, and I decided to do a review of the (entire) pack today.
All beers in the pack uses the same malt base, and is brewed to 75 IBU. All beers are also dry hopped using the same hop used for bitterness; Bramling X, Nelson Sauvin, Sorachi Ace and Citra. All beers has an ABV of 7.5%. The beers are reviewed in the order I drank them.
The aroma has tea, grass, some yeast and it has some hints of orange. Some wood as well after a while (after the temperature has risen a bit).
The flavor is much like the aroma. Grassy, flowers, bread and a bit woody. Almost a bit peaty after a while. There is quite some difference between 8°C and ~12°C in the flavor (and the aroma).
Medium long bitter finish.
I was not impressed by this beer. Bramling X used a bit less aggressively is OK, but it gets a bit too overpowering when used in these copious amounts. Score: 3.1/5
Some flowers, burnt plastic/rubber, tropical fruits (especially pineapple). The aroma is a bit funky. I have brewed my own single hop Nelson Sauvin and I’m getting much of the same from this beer.
Not as strong a flavor as one would think (after smelling it). I’m getting pineapple, and most of the funky hints from the aroma are no longer present. Some fruitiness and not very bitter.
Small hints of alcohol in the start of the finish. Nice bitterness.
I have had quite a few beers with this hop and I’m a fan of it. Score: 3.4/5
Pretty weird aroma on this one. Soapy, lemon zest, oranges and small hints of bread. Almost like fruity bubble gum.
The taste is like liquid bubble gum. There is a huge amount of lemon and some orange in the flavor as well. Very refreshing. The flavor is a bit artificial (like the aroma) but in my opinion the taste is better then the aroma.
Also a bit like bubble gum. Not very bitter.
I’m having a hard time rating this beer. Some parts of it was pretty interesting, but then again, liquid bubble gum? Really? Well, somehow it worked for me. Score: 3.5/5.
Lots of citrus, fruits, grapefruit and a bit tea-like. The smell on this beer is very good!
Much of the same as in the aroma. Citrus, some apricot and nice medium bitterness. The tea from the aroma is also present in the flavor. I pretty much love the hop used in this beer.
Citrus finish with some pine as well Good bitterness in the finish. Very pleasant.
For me this was the (by far) best beer in the IPA is Dead pack. I really enjoyed this beer! 4/5
This was a pretty interesting review. It’s always nice to try single hop beers. I have previously done the same with Mikkellers single hop series (not on this blog though), and it’s good to understand how different hops react with the beer. As a home brewer I have brewed some single hop IPA’s myself (Nelson Sauvin, Cascade and Chinook). It would be cool to use the same hops as this mixed pack and compare the result. That sounds another blog post though.
Here are the “results” of this review, in descending order (best to least good):
- Citra: 4/5
- Sorachi Ace: 3.5/5
- Nelson Sauvin: 3.4/5
- Bramling X: 3.1/5
Anyone else tried this pack and came to a different conclusion? Feel free to leave a comment!
