Beer review: Mikkeller/BrewDog/Nøgne Ø Black Tokyo* Horizon

This beer is a collaboration between three great breweries/brewers: The Danish “gypsy brewer” Mikkeller, Scottish BrewDog and Norways Nøgne Ø.

These three breweries used their own huge imperial stouts (Mikkeller Black, BrewDog Tokyo* and Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon) as inspiration for this huge 17.2% ABV beer.

As black as black can be. The beer looks like oil when poured.

A small dark brown head builds up but quickly disappears.

The label looks very nice, and the box that the beer comes in makes the whole experience a bit more exciting.

Very complex aroma with dark chocolate, some nutty hints and some liquorice.

Some spicy hints comes through as well once the beer gets a bit warmer. I poured the beer when it was about 8°C and sipped it for quite some time. At the end I’m guessing it was closer to 18°C.

I’m getting dark chocolate, caramel sweetness, roasted malt and something reminding me of raisins. The mouth feel is pretty big. Feels like oil!

I’m not getting any hint of alcohol at all.

The finish is very long lasting and keeps most of the flavors around for quite a while. Very enjoyable!

Food matches

For me this is a dessert beer. I would enjoy this beer to chocolate desserts with nuts and caramel sauce. Perhaps some ice cream with some of the beer used as sauce as well.

It might be an idea to try some different cheeses as well with this beer. Some smoked cheeses might be a good match.

This beer is huge! I really like it and I’m looking forward to tasting it again in a year or two. Score: 4.4/5.
