Beer review: Xbeeriment Barack

This is one of three Xbeeriment bottles I picked up from Vika Vinmonopol in Oslo the other day after feeling pretty bummed about not getting my order of BrewDog Hello, My name is Ingrid from Systembolaget through.

Xbeeriment Barack was brewed (at Amager Bryghus) to celebrate Barack Obama’s inaugural as the 44th President of the United States, and the first black person to hold the office.

Xbeeriment BarackLooks

Dark brown color with a milk chocolate colored head that laces nicely on the glass.

The first thing that hits me is peat and roasted malts.

After a while I’m getting some chocolate notes together with coffee. Some pine from the hops as well. Smells really lovely!

The flavor is much like the aroma. Peat, dark chocolate, roasted malt and some bitterness from the hops. Quite a complex beer!

After some time in the glass the beer gives me hints of apples as well which was not present at all when I first poured it.

A beer like this should not be served to cold, and should stay in the glass for a while so most of the flavors can be savored. For me this beer peaked at about 12°C. Very complex, but still quite balanced.

Long finish with a good amount of peat. A bit more bitterness in the finish than expected.

Food matches

I enjoyed this beer with some dark chocolate with honey and almonds which was a pretty good match. The beer will probably work well with many different sweet chocolate desserts.

This beer might play well with some well aged Parmesan or Cheddar cheeses as well.

This is a really good stout! Loads of different flavors but still quite balanced. Score: 4.2/5.

Kjempetorsken (which attended the first BeerNorway tasting) has also reviewed this beer. Check it out over at his blog.
