Beer review: Stone Imperial Russian Stout 2009

This is the 2009 release of Stone Imperial Russian Stout from Stone Brewing. I had this beer on a small tasting with a couple of friends two weeks back and somehow forgot to review it. Let’s have at it then!

It’s not every day you get to taste beers from Stone Brewing in Norway, as they are pretty hard to come by. Luckily for us Stone plan on opening a brewery in Europe as well! When that happens you can expect quite a few reviews of Stone beers. Anyway, on with the show.

Stone Imperial Russian StoutLooks

Pitch black with a milk chocolate brown-ish head. Looks wonderful!

Aroma

The aroma of this beer is very powerful. Roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and caramel sweetness.

There are also hints of alcohol but not much.

Flavor

As powerful as the aroma, and most of the notes from the aroma is present here as well. Despite all the different flavors the beer is very balanced.

The mouth feel is also very pleasant. Feels very smooth!

Finish

A small hint of the hops are present up front in the finish but is quickly overpowered by the roasted malts. A really good finish!

Food matches

As with other beers in this style I would stick to chocolate desserts.

Personally I tend to savor complex beers such as this one by itself.

Rating

A very complex and balanced beer. Truly amazing. Score: 5/5.
