Beer review: Stone Levitation Ale

In the beginning of 2012 I pre-ordered some cases of beer from Stone Brewing Co. via Great Brands in Sweden: Levitation Ale, Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Ruination IPA and Oaked Arrogant Bastard. This post is the first in a series of five with reviews of these beers.

First up, the Levitation Ale. Here is what Stone has to say:

This deep amber ale has rich malt flavors, a big hoppy character, citrus overtones (courtesy of the hops and our special brewers yeast) and modest alcohol.

Lovely deep amber color with a beige head. The head has pretty good retention and leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

Malty nose with hints of caramel and some roasted character. I’m also getting some citrus aromas.

The flavor also has hoppy hints to it, but also a solid malty base. I’m getting citrus and pine from the hops in the flavor as well. I’m also reminded of biscuits and some nuts.

The beer is well balanced and has a slightly thin mouth feel. The carbonation level is medium to soft.

Bitter finish which lasts quite a while. The pine is present in the finish as well.

An overall very enjoyable beer, packed full of flavor and easy to drink. It’s just a tad bit too thin in my opinion. Score: 3.7/5.
