Tonight I’m enjoying yet another beer from HaandBryggeriet: Dark Force. This beer is a Russian Imperial Stout in style with an ABV of 9%. Unlike most beers I know in this style it has been brewed with wheat. I can’t really remember having an Imperial Stout that has wheat in it, at least not that I know of. If anyone reading this know of others Imperial Stouts with wheat, feel free to leave a comment.
Enough talk already, let’s open the beer!
This beer has a very dark brown oily pour. The head has a lovely light brown color, disappears quite fast and does not leave much lacing.
As it comes out of the bottle the beer looks silky smooth!
Up front I’m getting some spicy sour notes. I’m also getting roasted malts, some alcohol and a small touch of soy sauce.
The flavor also has a slight sour feel to it. I’m picking up some smoke but not much. I’m also getting some hoppy notes from the flavor.
The mouth feel is almost as silky smooth at the pour looked. The carbonation is a tad bit sharp, but not unpleasant.
The finish has some alcohol notes up front, which is replaced by roasted malts and some smokiness. The finish lasts quite long.
This is in my opinion not a very typical imperial stout, and I know many beer-loving people that does not enjoy this beer. I however love it! As many other beers from HaandBryggeriet it’s exciting and different! And damned tasty! Score: 4.3/5.
This bottle was batch #449, brewed in February 2012. I must remember to pick up some more of this beer to cellar it for a while!
